A terrible thing has happened to our good friend and dojo member, Steve Ridley. Steve suffered a stroke that has left him completely paralyzed. He is now in what is known as a locked-in state. What this means is, Steve can still see, hear and think normally, but he can move nothing but his eyes.

For those of you that might not know, Steve has long been a very active member of our dojo. He taught our Wednesday evening classes, as well as many of our beginners' classes. There are few students in our dojo that have not been influenced by Steve's endless patience, perseverance and willingness to help.

As you might guess, Steve is going to need as much help and support as we can offer him. He is currently in intensive care at Strong Memorial Hospital. You are encouraged to visit him, to talk to him and read to him. If you'd like, you can check with the ICU secretary shortly before you go to make sure Steve is available for visitors. That number is 275-2642.

A phone line has also been created by Steve's friends with a recorded message on his current condition. The number is 585-527-9209.

When you first visit, you may want to plan to come with other friends as it is hard to see Steve in this state. And remember, Steve can hear and understand everything you say. If you can't come to visit him, you might think about sending him a card or letter. For now, address cards and letters to Steve Ridley (patient), Strong Memorial Hospital, 601 Elmwood Ave., Rochester, NY 14624.

If you have questions, you can e-mail me at jlahue@saatchibiz.com, Rob Greene (a dojo member who is also a doctor) at rgreene5@rochester.rr.com, or Paul Gardner at pgardner@rochester.rr.com.

Thanks for keeping Steve in your prayers.

A New Baby

At times like this, we can certainly appreciate good news. And we have it this month in the form of a new baby, born to Lisa Fuller and Larry Alexander. Marcella Fuller Alexander—"Ella"—was born at 6:15 PM on September 15. Larry, who is currently deployed with the Army reserves in Texas, was home for the birth. Congratulations to the three of you, and thank you for sharing your joy with us.

Our Newest Black Belts

We were remiss in mentioning some outstanding tests that happened at Summer Camp this past July. Ron Beck, Marcella Mosher, and Les Weiner all tested for Shodan (black belt). They had trained extensively for their tests, with special training sessions attended and supported by other dojo members. Their hard work and commitment paid off in fine tests. Congratulation Ron, Marcella, and Les on attaining your black belts!

Recent Testing

The following people recently tested for their next rank: For 6th Kyu, Mark Elliott. For 5th Kyu, David Simons, Kevin Daniels, and Michael Buts. For 4th Kyu, Rosemary Pleninger and Mark Trip. And for 3rd Kyu, Christian Haacke, Bob Martini, and Carroll Wilcox. Congratulations to all on your new ranks.
